Innovating for a Healthier World
PHL, established as Poultry Health Laboratories, has been a leading player in the animal health industry since 1960. Over the past six decades, the company has transformed itself from a developer of vaccines for poultry to a pre-eminent worldwide contract manufacturer of a wide range of veterinary products. Our story is one of innovation, adaptation, and a commitment to providing the highest quality vaccines for the animal health industry.
Our Products: A Diverse Range of Solutions
From our beginnings, PHL has produced a variety of products to protect and accommodate many different species. We have always placed a strong emphasis on the development of autogenous vaccines, which are custom-made to fit specific needs. This has allowed us to create tailored solutions for our clients and to respond quickly to emerging threats in the animal health sector.
One of our most significant contributions to the industry is our tissue culture technique for vaccine production. This method, which we developed, is still widely used today as the most effective way to make many vaccines. We are proud to have played a crucial role in advancing vaccine production technology and continuing to do so.
In recent years, PHL has transitioned from avian to bovine vaccine production, reflecting changes in industry needs. We now work exclusively with Zoetis in the manufacture of the No. 1 E. coli mastitis vaccine, Zoetis ENVIRACOR J-5. This focus on a single product allows us to concentrate on every vital area needed to produce the very best E. coli mastitis vaccine available today.
Expertise: A Team of Dedicated Professionals
Our team at PHL is our greatest asset. Education and experience are the keys to our success, and our staff includes veterinarians, PhD's, and University of California at Davis graduates from a variety of scientific backgrounds. We take pride in the fact that over 80% of our staff have been with the company for more than seven years, reflecting our commitment to building a dedicated and knowledgeable workforce.
Heritage: A Foundation of Innovation
Our heritage can be traced back to the early 1960s when Dr. Robert Wichmann obtained his D.V.M. and Ph. D. from the University of California Davis. Instead of going into the small animal field, he chose to focus on microbiology and finding new ways to develop and produce vaccines for farm or feed animals. His pioneering spirit led to the establishment of Poultry Health Laboratories and the development of the first Newcastle Disease vaccine and later the first ParvoVirus vaccine for dogs. These innovations laid the groundwork for further generations of vaccine producers to follow.
Under Dr. Wichmann's leadership, PHL produced a variety of products for food animals, many of which are still in production. He and his wife, Arlene, continued to produce products for everything from chickens to cattle. In 1987, they decided to turn the reins over to their sons, and the company lives on today. The efforts, innovation, and ingenuity of the Wichmanns continue to bear their names in the products and techniques they developed and that are still in use today.
